Story Number One

Creeping Cryptids

When I was a kid I used to go to my grandparents house for the summer. They had a huge backyard that might as well have been a pasture. No one else was around at night so after the bonfire BBQs we would have all sitting around eating steak and marshmallows, I would tend to the fire as it died out while telling spooky campfire stories with my brother.

One night he went out with his friends so I was all alone. Normally, you can see almost everything around you because even when the moon isn’t full, it still brightens the darkness enough because it’s the only light but that night there was no moon and all I  could see was the smoldering fire in front of me.

I heard an owl hoot in the distance and then another. It was like they were talking back and forth to each other. But then the silence came. I was so bored that I started walking around the part of the yard without trees. See, lined against my grandparent’s pasture are the woods. No one walks in the woods ever. There are lots of predator animals out there like coyotes and wolves who keep their distance from the open space because they know they’ll get shot, but in the woods they keep hidden. They’re oddly smart like that.

Behind the trees, I could hear something growling off in the distance. I stopped and listened for a moment. It was close. Too close for me. As I started walking back to the campfire, the sound seemed to come up behind me with every step. But whenever I turned around I didn’t see anything.

The sound kept getting closer and this time it felt like it was right next to my skull. I felt hot breath upon my neck and a smell of dead stench like the worst hot breath you’d ever smell. I didn’t wait to turn around, I started to run for it. My brother was just pulling into the driveway with his friends and I heard him screaming “RUN BILLY RUN!”

You can bet I ran as fast as I could. I heard the footsteps right behind mine but they weren’t galloping like a wolf or coyote should have been. These were running on two feet. Whatever it was, was human or something I couldn’t even imagine. I couldn’t stop to see because I could feel it at my back.

As I approached the dying fire, I felt nails scrape down my back through my flannel shirt and then nothing. It was gone. I had tears streaming down my face but I was too scared and hyped up to cry or feel the pain. My brother helped me inside and when Grandma took my shirt off to see the wound, she held up the shirt and through the light I could see four long cuts like a claw all the way down the shirt.

“Those damn cryptids!” she spat as she started to wash the stinging scratches on my back. “You’d think they wouldn’t have tried again after we shot the last one!”

That was the last time I went even near the boundary line.

Story Number Two

Boardwalk Nightmare

I’ve lived in Santa Cruz all my life and have heard a lot of strange tales about the Santa Cruz Mountains but rarely ever about near the beach. But during the past year when few people were at the beach and everything was shut down, there’s been some really strange stuff going on late at night.

I live on the lighthouse side of the beach, that’s on the other side of the Boardwalk for you tourists out there. It’s an older neighborhood with lots of older homes and people who have lived in the town for a long time. Many people don’t want to sell their homes because they don’t want the influx of outsiders coming in and they don’t want to lose those lower tax rates on older homes for if they sold and bought a new house the taxes would be insane. So here we stay. I don’t mind. It’s a beautiful place.

OK back to the story. So it’s been quiet a lot here which is unusual because the whole place is really a tourist trap with the boardwalk. I won’t tell you what my job is because you’ll figure out who I am rather quickly if I do, Santa Cruz is still a small town that way, and I want to remain anonymous. So I’m working my job which is a graveyard shift in town and a lot of people have left because of covid and the recent fires. The streets roll up really early in certain parts now. It was like a graveyard outside because all you can hear are the waves coming in. There are no cars, no people walking around. It’s really spooky.

So I’m minding my own business doing my work thing and I hear this low tremor of a growl behind me. My first thought was “oh shit there’s a mountain lion and I’m all alone.” I know I can’t run for it or it will attack me so I slowly turn around to face it. I don’t see a mountain lion at all but a shadow on the ground of a person. I look harder into the distance and in the light of the building near me I see this hot chick walking to me. I mean she was sauntering over like she was hungry and I don’t mean for food. Now I have a girlfriend and I was working really hard doing doubleshifts so I could buy her a ring and I’m not going to go all crazy on some strangely hot one night stand. Maybe a few years ago but now it was different.

I thought maybe she was on drugs or needed help because she wasn’t wearing anything. I told her to stop but she just kept walking, almost like she was prowling. She came a bit closer and I could see her eyes. They were glowing amber. I mean really glowing! Her nails were longer than normal and were dripping red. As I looked closer she had what looked like blood stains on her chin, neck, and down the front of her body.

“I’m calling the cops,” I said and she just smiled then cooed this incredible purr from her lips. I shouldn’t have been feeling what I was feeling because of my girlfriend but at that moment I almost forgot all about her. She reached out and ran her nails across my face without scratching me and I lost all senses at that moment. I got right up close to her, smelling her wild scent. I got right up to kiss her but looked at her mouth. Those bloodstained teeth woke me right up. They were jagged and sharp. Not like a cat or a dog but from some creature you’d see on a movie. Her tongue snaked out and licked her lips as she smiled.

“Don’t you want me?” she purred. “I’m hungry!”

She dug her nails into my shoulders and I could feel them piercing through my leather jacket. As her bloodstained teeth drew closer to my neck, I reached for my firearm holstered to my side and shot at her twice. She screeched like a cat and ran off on all fours east toward the hills.

People heard the shots and came running out of their houses and called the cops. I have a gun permit for my job so I didn’t get in trouble but they said the story sounded far-fetched until they saw the claw marks in my torn leather jacket.

Since I have bills to pay I can’t just leave my job but I wanted to. Fortunately, I haven’t seen whatever that was since.

Story Number Three

There is Something Living in My Shed

I own a 6-acre farm on the outskirts of a very familiar California town. Hobby farms are becoming a thing of the past here so I’m lucky mine was handed down by my family. I have lots of chickens, two horses, some goats, a steer, a couple of Dobermans, and barn cats. I also have a whole slew of wild animals including possums, jackrabbits, raccoons, mice, and the occasional coyote that gets shot at. I don’t want to kill the coyotes, but if they come too close to my animals, I will. So far the coyotes stay far away because of my dogs.

At one point I thought the coyote was getting into the shed and eating the cat and dog food. The strange thing is, you have to use your hands to open the shed door, and even weirder is that you have to use your hands to open the containers of food and put the lid back. For a while, I thought a human might be getting into the shed because of how the door and containers were opened so I left some clay dust out to catch some footprints of what might be getting in there. At the time I didn’t have any plugs outside or I would have set up one of my security cams right away.

I’d like to note that about this time I started to have some strange issues with my cell phone. I even wiped it several times but the problems kept coming. Sometimes I’d hear people talking on it and apps appearing. It was like another person was using my account even after I wiped it. I don’t jailbreak my phone or download too many strange apps so I don’t have a clue how this was happening. You’ll see why this is important in a bit.

The next night I found paw prints of a four-legged creature walking up to the door and walking away. It made no sense at all. I did this for a couple of nights and the same thing happened. I started keeping the food in the house but the prints would still appear. A few days later I bought a battery-run hunting cam and put it up outside of the shed. When I looked at the footage there was nothing in the picture, just the new prints. Frustrated, I put the hunting cam elsewhere and then added a battery-operated IP camera that would notify me when something came into view. It would go off, but nothing would still be in the picture.

The next night I was tossing and turning in my sleep. I was having dreams of someone watching me. When I turned over and briefly woke up, I almost screamed when I saw a face of a man with a beard and long hair in my window. He was there one minute and gone the next. I frantically grabbed a flashlight, a gun, and one of the dogs and went out to see who was out there. Whoever it was had disappeared really quickly or maybe the whole shed ordeal was giving me nightmares and I was lucid dreaming. Since I found no prints then I figured it was just a dream.

I began to find cigarettes and candy wrappers in tin cans in the shed. Now I’m a single woman. While I do have guns and alarms plus a couple of big dogs, I don’t want some strange person sleeping in my shed and sneaking around my house especially not looking in my windows at night.

I called the cops who came out to take a look but said unless someone is caught trespassing or squatting they really can’t do anything about it. Then I had an idea, I’d put the camera in an inconspicuous place. What if this was a person with a dog and that person could see the camera so he doesn’t leave footprints behind when getting into the shed? I placed the camera up into the rafters of the overhang in front of the shed where I could get a perfect view of the trespasser.

That night the alarm went off on my cell phone. I looked to see what happened. Right there, in front of my eyes, stood a man with a scruffy beard and wild hair sporting a backpack. I thought he might have been one of the local transients but then he looked at the camera. I could only see him a little bit from the side at first and he looked normal. I guess my camera must have clicked because he looked right at it but when he did I could see his glowing amber eyes and an elongated nose like a snout. At first, he sniffed at the camera and grinned when he reached for it and knew I was watching. As he grinned, sharp fang-like teeth protruded from his gums where his incisors should have been. His front teeth were smaller like a dog’s. It was the strangest thing I had ever seen.

He dropped the camera to the ground and I watched his boot raise up then stomp on the camera. I locked all of the doors and called the cops. By the time they got there he was gone and so was the video from the camera and my phone. I have no clue how he got into my phone to erase the video but it’s gone.

I never saw him again after that. There were no more prints and my phone hasn’t had any strange occurrences since he disappeared.

Story Number Four

Stalked By a Skinwalker

Okay. Okay. You take one look at the title of my story and immediately think it’s fake. It’s not. I’ve been stalked by a skinwalker and I tell you that it’s real. Do I have proof? No! I used to scoff at people when they never showed proof of their claims but after this happened I can see why. You’re never ready to take that picture and if you do get a chance to somehow remember to pull out your phone while you’re shaking in fear then it’s going to happen so fast you’re either not going to remember how to take a pic or the thing will disappear before you can hit that button. I know. It happened to me!

I ride BART every night. That means Bay Area Rapid Transit for those who don’t know what the BART system is. It’s a commuter train in the San Francisco Bay Area. The community I leave the train in is in a suburb of San Francisco and in kind of rural area. We have a lot of people but also a lot of hills and trees. Our hills are littered with predators so I can only imagine where this thing hides out.

I don’t know if I can call it a skinwalker or not. I mean, I live on the west coast and we don’t have a lot of skinwalker stories out here but the mountain real close to me has a few old native legends but they’re not exciting like skinwalkers. They’re actually rather boring and not really scary at all. But this thing looks exactly like what people claim a skinwalker looks like.

I walk home from the transit center where the train drops me off. It’s too far for a cab but it’s also not on a bus route. I don’t have a car because of the stupid laws here so I walk to and from the BART station. It really isn’t that far. It’s about a mile away from my apartment complex. I walk there really early in the morning, sometimes when it is still dark and no one is out and then sometimes late at night because I always wait for the last trains so I  can get a seat. Believe me, it’s standing room only when you’re riding from Montgomery Street in San Francisco. The train is full until about 6:30 PM.

Back in February, when it was still dark on the way home, I started seeing this guy getting off the stop at the same time I did every single night. He looked like a homeless guy or a hippie with older, ragged clothes and unshaven. I figured he wasn’t homeless because he was pretty clean and didn’t have a backpack with him at all. I thought he was waiting for a bus every night when I would start walking home but then I caught him following me.

I was looking in my phone when I noticed the reflection of a man on the phone screen. He followed me most of the way then disappeared near the pond before I got home. The next day walking to the BART train I noticed that something had attacked and mutilated all of the ducks and geese in the pond. There were white feathers and dead birds everywhere.

The thought of this guy doing it didn’t enter my mind until the next night. He got off the train at the same time I did and I was so creeped out by him the night before I waited to see if he was going to leave first. He did, the same route I went, but I was about 5 minutes behind him. When I got up to the pond I saw him biting into the neck of a goose as it tried to scurry away.

“What the fuck?” I accidentally said really loudly.

He looked up, his eyes glowing yellow, and smiled at me with the blood from the goose dripping down his chin. He stood straight up and seemed to grow taller as he stood. He looked 5 feet taller than he did before. His body was covered in matted hair where I could see and his clothes were torn where his limbs grew longer. He let the goose drop to the ground then started to walk toward me. I ran. I ran so fast that I don’t even remember if he followed me or not. Dead ass panting, I hid between the cars in the apartment parking lot and looked around. I didn’t see him at all.

Since then I started taking an earlier train even though it is standing room only. I don’t have a choice as I don’t have a license. I haven’t seen him since but I did get a strange message in my email one day. It had a weird email address on it that warned me not to share his email address or he would know who did it and that he wasn’t the only one like him in town.

Story Number Five

I Think I Hit a Skinwalker with My Camaro

My friends and me were driving home from a party one night. Bob was passed out in the passenger seat while Traci and Kim were sitting in the back so drunk they could barely stand up. I know I should haven’t been driving, but the bus system doesn’t go out to our area in the hills and the cabs would all be too expensive. I wasn’t as wasted as they were, but I was pretty bad off.

Traci and Kim are sisters and live next door while Bob was just going to  crash at my place. This was before anyone had mobile phones and computers so we couldn’t just call his parents to pick him up and he didn’t want to go home and get into trouble anyway. He said he’d just call them at my house then he tanked and snored all up until the point where I slammed on the brakes so hard I thought he was going to fly out the window and he said, “What the hell dude?” Then opened his door and puked out the side.

I didn’t care. I was too busy shaking. I don’t know if he felt it, but I thought I had hit a person. That guy was just standing there in front of me staring like a dog would when a car came. A person would have gone running off but this guy just stared at me. The crazy thing was, his eyes reflected the light like a dog’s would. I slammed on the brakes but it was too late. The nose of the car hit him and he went flying over the hood. At least I thought he but while Bob was puking he started screaming. There was a hair-covered arm sticking out from under the car.

He looked at him and asked if I had hit anyone and I said I thought I hit a dog but he said, “dude, this is no dog.” and continued to vomit.

Shaking and almost unable to stand, I got out of the car. There was blood all over the grill. I didn’t notice it but my windshield was also cracked. Something must have hit it. I went over to the passenger door and right there next to Bob’s disgusting mess was a human arm. It was covered in hair. It was severed from body it seemed.

I checked and the girls in the back seat were already passed out and didn’t wake up, thank God, or else there would have been a lot of screaming. I pulled the arm out from under the car but didn’t see any other body parts. Bob hobbled his drunk ass out of the seat and looked around the sides of the road for any other parts but whatever or whoever it was must have taken off because there was nothing. Since there was no evidence and thinking maybe he got away and went to the pound or wherever that thing lived, I tossed the arm into the bushes and we drove off.

I got the girls home to their mom who was pretty pissed off at all of us and then almost carried Bob into the room. My parents were never home and really didn’t give a crap what I did so I put him on the couch. I went to sleep in my room that night and started having nightmares about hitting people. I woke up crying because I don’t want to actually hit anything let alone a person!

When I woke up I saw something in my window. I got up to take a look and there was that thing. It’s arm was missing but looked like it had healed up. It was glaring at me, I could see it. I don’t know if my eyes were playing tricks in the light but it looked like it was 12 feet tall. It peered into my window with its yellowish eyes and sniffed with its long snout. It left a huge scratch on the tree outside with 4 really sharp claws then let out this screeching howl that I will never forget.

Since that night I’ve had a lot of really odd phone calls and people following me. I’m never alone and they’re always around. I’ve stopped talking to my friends and I spend most of the time with my shades drawn in my room. I don’t want them to find me. I sold my car. They asked what the damage was and I said I hit a dear. I mean who would believe me anyway, right?
